The Foodies’ Guide to Melbourne has just been released for 2012. And this year there is something extra to celebrate as Michele Curtis and I notch up ten years at the helm of The Foodies’ Guide. Yes it is our tenth anniversary edition.
And what a time it is for food lovers. Travelling the length and breadth of Melbourne and regional Victoria, we’ve discovered exciting new food stores that we can’t wait to share with you.
Melbourne has gone nuts for sweet things – people can’t get enough chocolate, cupcakes, macarons and gelati, it seems. Pastry chefs are working overtime on creating stunning stores to showcase their sweet temptations.
The Burch & Purchase Sweet Studio sets a new standard for cakes and desserts at its South Yarra store. And the explosion of interest in macarons has given us Lux Bite and La Belle Miette – entirely dedicated to creating the most glamorous macarons imaginable.
New gelati stores Cool Delights and Davey Macs have popped up in bayside Melbourne, while Casa Del Gelato on Lygon Street celebrates its thirtieth anniversary. That’s a serious milestone in anyone’s book.
Delicatessens are making a comeback too. Just take a look at the beautiful display of ingredients at Laikon on Swan Street, Delicatess in Prahran or the expanded Bill’s Farm in Queen Victoria Market. Or newcomers DOC and Bezela. Their success shows we still prefer to shop for real food beyond the supermarket experience.
